ABOUT

Carbondale

Carbondale sits roughly 170 miles west of Denver and about 30 miles from Aspen, nestled in the central Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Perched at an elevation just over 6,170 feet and framed by the towering twin peaks of Mount Sopris (12,953 ft), this welcoming mountain town began as territory used by Ute peoples and later drew silver prospectors, ranchers, and potato farmers to its fertile valleys. Today, it’s known for blending its historic roots in mining, ranching, and agriculture with a lively cultural scene and a growing reputation as a hub for sustainable businesses and creative industries.

Celebrated by National Geographic Adventure as one of the “Top 12 Towns” in the “50 Next Great Places to Live and Play” and praised by Men’s Journal as one of the “50 Best Places to Live/Most Active Towns,” Carbondale has long been recognized as an ideal base camp for outdoor enthusiasts.

With abundant sunshine (around 295 days per year), low humidity, and mild seasonal temperatures, Carbondale is a playground for all kinds of adventure. Whether you’re biking or hiking scenic trails, casting flies on Gold Medal waters of the Roaring Fork and Crystal Rivers, kayaking and rafting, or honing your skills at the skatepark, there’s something for every outdoor lover. In winter, the Spring Gulch Nordic Trail System offers miles of cross-country skiing right near town, while world-renowned alpine skiing and snowboarding await at nearby Aspen Snowmass and Sunlight Mountain Resort.

Carbondale also anchors the West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway—a 205-mile scenic drive that winds through wilderness, forests, and classic Colorado towns, with Carbondale as its northern gateway.

Culturally, the town is a Certified Colorado Creative District, boasting art galleries, public art installations, an annual Mountain Fair arts & music festival, and community institutions that support a thriving creative economy. Local organizations like Carbondale Arts help nurture hundreds of artists, makers, and cultural events that enrich community life.

Accessible via regional airports in Aspen, Eagle/Vail, and Grand Junction, Carbondale’s mix of vibrant arts, small-town character, and year-round outdoor recreation continues to draw residents and visitors alike.
